Prevent Hand Injuries with SMP Safety Chocks

Hand injuries can be prevented, yet year in and year out industrial plants spend millions of dollars in lost time injuries and medical expenses related to injuries to the hands and fingers. Gloves are important, but they certainly wouldn’t help the guy in the picture above.
Sticking your fingers between flanges is akin to playing Russian roulette. You’re betting that you can reach in and adjust the gasket into place before the flanges slam shut. The odds are in your favor, until they’re not, and your fingers are either crushed or gone.
It makes complete sense to chock your flanges open. Yes, it is an extra step, but one that will ensure you go home with your fingers intact. SMP 1001 Safety Chocks allow the user to create just the right thickness they need for the gap between the flanges they are working with. Once the flanges are open to the desired width, create a similar thickness with the SMP 1001 Multi-Thickness Safety Chock and insert between the flanges. There is a tie-off ring if you’re working up high.
You would still never stick your fingers between the flanges. Anything can go wrong and it just isn’t worth it. SMP also carries the FlangeKing Gasket Scraper to clean the flange faces first and then adjust the gasket into place before bringing the flanges back together.
So, always chock your work and never stick your fingers between spread flanges! Oh, and always wear gloves!!
